ALL THE QUESTIONS (AND ANSWERS!)...
(If you have any other questions you can always flick me a message)
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Essentially you need to wear what you love and what feels comfortable to you but I can offer some simple pointers to ensure your family photograph stunningly.
Remember the trend from the nineties of dressing everyone in denim and white tees? Yeah....please, please, please don't do that.
In fact, try to avoid matching at all. Instead, focus on choosing outfits that complement one another in tone and texture.
Natural and earthy tones are fantastic and photograph really well, as do pastels and even rich colours such as burgundy, mustard and deep greens look amazing. Pops of bright colour can also work wonderfully. I'm a sucker for a bit of a colour pop!
Try to avoid shirts with logos or text if you can. These don't tend to photograph well and can really date images (in saying that, if your little is screaming bloody murder and refusing to take off their favourite superhero costume, you might choose to let it go - after all, we are trying to capture who they are at this precise moment.
Varied textures in your choice of clothing are great (think denim, wool, linen, corduroy, cotton) and layering is brilliant (such as scarves, beanies and vests or even your old gumboots!).
Ultimately, what you wear won't matter too much. I'm there to document who you really are so if, when I come, your toddler's butt naked and your son is refusing to put on a shirt, those are going to be stunning pictures. Authentic and sweet shots are all that really matter!
DO YOU USE PROPS?
No, not usually, but if there's a special object (such as a much-loved blanket or favourite worn out, old toy) that you'd like included in the session then be sure to let me know and we can capture that.
WILL WE GET ANY PHOTOS OF THE WHOLE FAMILY?
Yes - of course.
These will not be typical family portraits though. I'll not be lining you all up and telling you to say cheese. I am a documentary photographer and that means as little of my involvement as possible. We'll keep it casual and maybe play a game or three to ensure we're capturing all the loveliness.
But if all else fails I usually follow a strict to-hell-with-the-rules-let’s-just-do-whatever-the-heck-we-want approach during my sessions! Some of the time I’ll be observing you all. Other times I might catch someone doing something special and ask you to do it over again. Or I’ll spot some magical light or some beautiful leading lines (that's photography speak for good stuff!) and place your littles right in the middle of it. Ultimately if you just be your beautiful selves we will get some awesome shots!
WHAT IF WE CAN'T THINK OF WHAT TO DO FOR OUR SESSION?
Don't worry about that, we can work together to come up with ideas.
I can send you a little questionnaire that will help prompt some memories you might like to capture or a location that is special to you.
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF DAY FOR A SESSION?
This depends on a lot of things (like the weather!).
For location sessions late afternoons are often best for the soft light.
These are the times when the sun is lowest in the sky and the least harsh.
A grey morning is beautiful for creating moodiness or some high noon sun will create some stunning sun flare.
If you're planning an in-home session, the timing is a little looser. In fact, the middle of the day is sometimes a good time, as it can mean more light inside.
If we're organising an in-home session, watch the light in your home during different times of the day and let me know if there's a special window of magic - dappled light on a bedroom wall or sunshine pouring in through the kitchen window. We need to chase all that goodness!
WILL WE GET ANY IMAGES WE CAN FRAME?
You certainly will. They may not be traditional photos with everyone lined up and all smiling but they will be authentic to your family and of course artistic.
Printing photographs is something I'm a big advocate for. We don't want to capture all those gorgeous images to have them sit on a usb for all of eternity!
So whether you would love some large framed prints for your lounge or some little squares to put on the fridge it's all good. We can definitely make it happen.
CAN YOU DO MID-WEEK SESSIONS?
Yes. Mid-week works for me, as it means I can spend time with my babies on the weekends. And when I say 'spend time' I mean ferrying them back and forth to sports games and birthday parties.
CAN YOU DO EVENTS?
Sometimes. As a mumma of four it's often pretty busy around here but send me a message and let me know what you have in mind.
Get in touch and and we can talk logistics!
